This information is meant to help guide you. If you have any questions, please make sure to ask your residents and site directors.

CLINICS

​

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Clerks will spend 3 weeks following their assigned mentor, which will include their office clinics, OR, and service on L&D

  • Email the preceptor and their admin to let them know you will be joining them and to ask when/where their clinics will take place, preferably a few days ahead of time to give them time to respond

    • You will receive an email with a list of contact information from the medical education coordinator 

  • Let the preceptor know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning 

    • Bring your stethoscope for office clinics 

    • Help clean the room in between patients

    • Opportunities to participate in specialty clinics at MGH based on student interest (Early Pregnancy Clinic, Gyne Clinic, Colposcopy Clinic, OB Medicine, Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine)


DETAILS

  • Storage: usually in the preceptor’s office

  • Lunch: usually a small room to store and heat up food, ask the admin 

  • Dress code: scrubs and business casual, both acceptable

  • Start time: variable, confirm with the preceptor through email

  • Notes: on Accuro or on paper, depends on the clinic and preceptor 


LOCATIONS

  • Preceptor office clinics are located across Toronto 

  • Early Pregnancy Clinic: Outpatient Paeds Clinic, 1stFloor, J wing

  • Gyne: OPD 1st floor, D wing 

  • Chief Resident Clinic: usually Thursday afternoons, may be changed due to COVID-19

  • Colposcopy: OPD 1st floor, D wing

  • OB Medicine: Next to Triage, 7thfloor,  J wing

  • Pediatric & Adolescent: Outpatient Paeds Clinic, 1stfloor, G wing



GYNE

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Clerks will spend 1 week on gyne

  • Rounding: 

    • Report to the ward on B5 with residents for rounds at 7 AM

    • Speak to the chief resident on the first day about expectations regarding preparing lists, charting

  • Attend 8 AM seminar after rounds

  • If you will be in the OR and there is a seminar at 8 AM: Try to introduce yourself to the patient before you start the seminar if there is time (in the pre-op area if the OR has not started yet) 

  • Never do a pelvic exam on an unconscious patient in the OR if you did not meet them previously – unless given express permission by the staff OBGYN

  • Introduce yourself to the staff OBGYN and RN’s when you arrive in the OR. Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse. 

  • You may also receive opportunities to do ER (1st floor, J wing) or floor consults

  • Lunch: Fridge and microwave in A-wing, 4th floor; food options on main floor and G4

  • Dress code: Scrubs

  • Start time: usually 7 AM, ask the chief resident if there are any changes

  • OR start time: 8 AM 

  • Notes: entered on the Electronic Patient Record


LOCATIONS

  • In-patients: can be located on various floors, including B5 and J7

  • OR: OR floor, 6th wing, J floor


                          

L&D

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Clerks will spend 2 weeks on L&D 

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and phone number in Triage (1) and the nursing station by the ward clerk (2) and white board (3) 

  • It is helpful to introduce yourself to the charge nurse, staff, FP OB fellow, and residents. It is also useful to exchange phone numbers with the resident at the beginning of the shift. 

  • Always introduce yourself to the patient before you attend their delivery; check in with the preceptor if you did not get a chance to do so before the patient started pushing 

  • Components: assisting with vaginal/Caesarean deliveries on L&D, assessing patients in triage, writing progress/delivery notes

  • Always bring back-up socks! (you may be splashed with bodily fluids)

  • If you know the resident on your team for the day, let them know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning. If you don’t know, it is fine to find them after and explain that you were at teaching

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse

  • Dress code: Scrubs 

  • Start time: 8 AM 

  • Notes:

    • Triage: Perform a full history and physical exam (**the pelvic exam must be done with the staff physician or resident)

    • Labour Checks: Labour Assessment Note (cervical exams recorded in this template get updated on the board); typically the preferred template, check with the resident


LOCATIONS

  • Family Birthing Centre, 7th floor, J-wing

  • Typically meet the resident and staff OBGYN by the white board in the Nursing Station 

  • OR for CS: Same area as L&D in the 7th floor, J-wing



CALL

SEE ABOVE NOTES FOR L&D. ADDITIONAL INFO BELOW:

  • Call is always on L&D, regardless of what week you are on 

  • Start time: 5 PM 

  • Call room: A-wing, 4th floor

    • On the day of call, contact security (x6016) for a room assignment after 1 PM

  • Not required to attend seminar post-call
