This information is meant to help guide you. If you have any questions, please make sure to ask your residents and site directors.

CLINIC


INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Email the preceptor and their admin to let them know you will be joining them and to ask when/where the clinic will take place, preferably 2 days ahead of time to give them time to respond

    • You will receive an email with a list of contact information from the medical education coordinator 

  • Let the preceptor know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning 

    • Bring your stethoscope for OB and Gyne clinics. A measuring tape for OB clinics would also be useful if you have one.

    • Help clean the room in between patients.


DETAILS

  • Storage: preceptor’s office, call room in MSH, locker if assigned one in MedEd

  • Lunch: usually a small room to store and heat up food, ask the admin; food court located downstairs 

  • Dress code: Scrubs and business casual both acceptable

  • Start time: variable, confirm with the preceptor through email

  • Notes: on Accuro or on paper, depends on the clinic and preceptor 


LOCATIONS

  • OB: OPG Building 3rd Floor 

  • Gyne: OPG Building 8th Floor 

  • Urogyne: OPG Building 8th Floor (Right as you enter)

  • REI: 250 Dundas St W 7th floor (Mostly online during the pandemic)

GYNE

​

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Rounding: 

    • Prepare the list: print the signout list (Powerchart WIPS gyne signout password will be given to you by the team detailed print), write vitals + BW + new results, make enough copies for the team 

    • Prepare the charts: SOAP format, ID, post-op day, vitals, BW, new imaging

  • The chief resident will discuss what will be happening the next day in the group chat, typically on WhatsApp. If the option is available, decide with your colleague if you are going to the OR or helping with other tasks such as consults (this may change day to day, go with the flow)

  • Chief clinics are on Fridays only

  • Let the chief resident know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning

  • If you will be in the OR and there’s a seminar at 8am: Try to introduce yourself to the patient before you start seminar if there is time (in the pre-op area if the OR has not started yet) 

  • Never do a pelvic exam on an unconscious patient in the OR if you did not meet them previously – unless given express permission by the team 

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse 

  • Tucking rounds to check on the patients before signing off; done with the chief resident; no notes needed; occurs before 6pm handover

  • Storage: 16th floor call room in a corner, usually by the couch 

  • Lunch: Fridge and microwave in 16th floor call room, food court on main floor 

  • Dress code: Scrubs; Business casual for chief clinic on Friday’s

  • Start time: Set by the chief resident the night before (the chief resident will add you to the chat generally by 9pm the day before to set a time for rounding)

  • OR start time: 7:45 Mon-Thurs, 8:45 Fri; (Rounding/teaching comes first) 

  • Notes: 

    • Consults: on the pink consult sheets found in the ED 

    • Wards: paper progress sheets in the charts

    • Patients on the 15th floor: Powerchart


LOCATIONS

  • In-patients: located on various floors, 11, 14, 15

  • OR: MSH 5th floor, sometimes at WCH but CC3’s generally stay at MSH  

  • Chief clinic: OPG Building 8th Floor (Head over with chief resident after rounding) 



GYNE ONC

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Email the preceptor and their admin to let them know you will be joining them and to ask when/where the clinic will take place, preferably 2 days ahead of time to give them time to respond

    • You will receive an email with a list of contact information from the medical education coordinator 

  • Let the preceptor or resident know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning 

  • Not required to round in the morning 

  • ORs are either in MSH or TGH. You are encouraged to wear the appropriate scrubs for the site you will be at

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse 


DETAILS

  • Storage:

    • Clinic: In a corner in the work room; also a closet if you ask someone to show you

    • OR: MSH 16th call room or TGH resident call room on the 10th floor (liaise with the residents or use the locker assigned in Helliwell) 

  • Lunch: fridge and microwave available, ask the PA’s

  • Dress code: Scrubs for OR days, either scrubs or business casual for clinic days 

  • Start time: variable, confirm with the preceptor through email

  • Notes: Make sure you set up dictation for UHN for clinic at PMH; you will likely be encouraged to dictate and you can edit your dictation through CLIP shortly after. The PA’s are extremely helpful. 


LOCATIONS

  • Clinic: PMH 5th Floor (There’s a big sign where the clinic is located. Tell the front desk who you will be working with. If you’re not sure, tell them you will be with the surgical team.) 

  • OR: MSH 5th floor, or TGH 2ndfloor

L&D

​

INFORMATION/TIPS

  • Postpartum Rounding: 

    • Typically starts around 6:45-7:00am​

    • Meet in call room where list will be divided 

    • See the patients, write the note in Powerchart, then join your team for handover 

    • If there are any concerns about patients, make sure to let your resident know

  • Two teams: 

    • Team A: blue, low-risk, off-service resident typically present

    • Team B: green, high-risk, fellow present, off-service resident sometimes present

    • Choose with your colleague; if nobody is scheduled on L&D with you, you can choose 

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and phone number on the whiteboard at the nursing station and at triage 

  • Useful to exchange phone numbers with the resident at the beginning of the shift

  • Always introduce yourself to the patient before you attend their delivery; check in with the preceptor if you did not get a chance to do so before the patient started pushing 

  • Components: vaginal/cesarean deliveries on L&D, assessing patients in triage

  • Always bring back-up socks! (you may be splashed with bodily fluids)

  • If you know the resident on your team for the day, let them know you will join later if there is a seminar in the morning. If you don’t know, it is fine to find them after and explain that you were at teaching

  • Write your name, level of training (CC3), and glove size on the whiteboard in the OR. Grab your gloves and hand them over sterilely to the scrub nurse

  • Notes:

    • Triage: OB Progress Note (full note format)

    • Labour Checks: Labour Assessment Note (cervical exams recorded in this template get updated on the board); typically the preferred template, check with the resident


LOCATIONS

  • MSH 15th floor

  • Typically meet the resident in the call room, or go directly onto L&D if you cannot find them

  • OR for CS: MSH 15th in the same area as L&D behind the nursing station area

CALL 

SEE ABOVE NOTES FOR L&D. ADDITIONAL INFO BELOW:

  • Call is always on L&D, regardless what week you are on 

  • Start time: 6:00 pm 

  • Team A: Covers gyne, both inpatients and ED consults

  • Dinner: The team will order together – make sure you thank them! 

  • Call room: 20th floor only accessible by Murray St Elevators

    • Follow instructions from MedEd, sheets and blankets in hallway closet/shelf

    • TIP: get a call room sooner rather than later, sometimes there are none left! 

  • Not required to attend seminar post-call
